Through the recurring installation and uninstallation of programs and through the constant creation and deletion of files your Windows XP or Vista computer will begin to slow down. It will not happen overnight but it will happen. All programs, files and Windows itself gets written to and stored a “hard drive” which is one type of memory storage a computer has. The above described scenario is called, “fragmentation”. So when your programs and files get scattered and disorganized on your computer, your hard drive becomes “fragmented”.

An analogy of why it slows down is, pretend you are working in a medical office that has 100 patients. Each patient has a folder with their medical history which contains multiple paperwork in each individual folder. One day a doctor asks you for Ann Smith’s folder. Since every folder is alphabetized it takes you less than 10 seconds to find it. Now what if a new office worker accidentally filed some of Ann Smith’s records under the patient folders of Ann Garcia and Adrienne Smith and you didn’t know about it? Would the search for all records that you would normally find in a file folder still be as fast and efficient, still taking you under 10 seconds to find? Of course not. The patient records search process would be slowed down considerably. The organization of these records would become, “fragmented”.

To combat hard drive fragmentation you must regularly “defragment” your hard drive via defragger programs. Windows XP and Vista have a decent one built-in but there are better ones out there. One of my favorites that does a better job than the standard Window defragger is a free program called, “JkDefrag” which is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista, 32 and 64-bit. JkDefrag is one of the easiest programs I have ever used. To use it all you do is open it up and JkDefrag does everything for you, automatically.

Please Note: If this is the first time you are, “defragging” your hard drive on your Windows XP or Vista computer it may take a while. Depending on the level of fragmentation and how fast or slow your PC is it might take several hours the first time around.
