How To Tell if/Prevent Someone From Stealing My Internet?

I was about to go to sleep last night and i just happened to notice that the lights on my modem were really blinking fast, like when im downloading something.

But i wasnt downloading anything, unless my security program was downloading in the background. I dont know why it caught my attention, it just seemed odd.

I have internet service from At & T and its supposed too be 3 MBPS and i have a  2wire 2700hg-b adsl modem. It has a wireless light on the panel that only lit up when i didnt have any internet service otherwise its always off and was off when i noticed all the light activity.

Anyway i did a speedtest and my speed was 0.94 when its usually around 1.78. So i unplug the modem for 2 minutes and turn it on and no extra light activity and do another speed test and its back to 1.5.

My question, is this modem is from about 2004 or 2005 and my account is set to be wireless if i have a new wireless modem. How can i block someone from stealing my service. Do i have to get the newest modem or is there free software to block my signal???

Hello,

What you have to do is password protect your wireless. If it is not password protected even a new wireless setup could be accessed.

When setting up your wireless it might give you different options of the type of password security you want. If it gives you any options that start with, "WPA 2..." select that. Secondary would be, "WPA...". The lesser wireless security encryptions can more easily be hacked into.
