So a while ago my laptop got the Win 7 Internet Security virus. I managed to find the specific file it was on and deleted it as quickly as possible, but the damage had already been done. Now, all of my .exe files won’t open properly. It always asks me to select a file to open, say, Internet Explorer or Microsoft Word. None of my .exe files will open up right unless I run them as administrators.

So I was just wondering if anyone knew how to get my .exe files back to the way they were (System Restore doesn’t fix it, if you’re wondering). I’d rather fix this myself instead of taking my laptop to a computer-fixer-uper store and spend $80 or so for them to fix a problem that seems rather simple to fix.

If anyone could help me out, I’d really appreciate it.

hi Ethan A
i had a customer with the same virus and nothing worked(not even the start menu). so i burnt a Linux live CD and ran that at start up. once i was in the live disc(Linux/Ubuntu),i then went into the windows operating system and found the documents folder and sent everything to an external hard drive(AKA backed everything up).
then from another computer i downloaded the security tools joey recommends.(ill drop a link to his tutorial)
after all was recovered/rescued/saved. i then had full control of the operating system again. seeing as i was repairing a customers computer i then decided to re-Format the PC just to be safe.
im hoping the scanning tools fix it for you without the need to do a full format.

Do what Davo suggested to backup any important files you may have on your PC.

Then reinstall Windows using the install discs that came with your PC.
