It is neither a good or bad idea.

A refurbished computer originally had at least one defective component. The vast majority of the time you are not told what component(s) were defective and hopefully fixed. Usually the pace you purchase it from has an easy 15-30 day return policy for the computer. You need to ask a store representative what will happen if something went wrong with the computer after a longer period like 8 months. Could you return the computer to the store for repair or would you have to ship it directly to the computer manufacturer yourself? There is also a possibility that the PC would be out of warrant. You need to ask how long the warranty for the computer would be.

On a positive note you should be able to purchase the refurbished computer at a nice discounted price. Sometimes the warranties that come with the refurbished computers are pretty decent.

My Recommendation:
Ask the salesman about the warranty on the refurbished computer. How long is it? If something happens to the computer after a few months, what will the procedures be to get it serviced, assuming that it still would be under warranty.
Compare prices of the refurbished computer with new computers that are similarly configured (compared CPU and RAM specs). How much are you really saving? Stores make about twice as much profit (sometimes more) from a $500 refurbished computer than they do from a $1,000 computer. See if you can haggle down the price of the refurbished computer.

Factor everything in to see if it is worth buying a refurbished computer.
