Joey
I bought a new seagate SATA drive to replace my old one. I put the Windows cd in and boot up and the computer hangs on the setup is inspecting your hardware configuration. I have tried resetting the CMOS, updating the bios, disconnecting
everything but the keyboard and mouse, resetting the memory nothing works.

I can see the drive in the BIOS but thats it. I hooked the drive up to a USB to SATA device and formatted it so I know the drive is good. Running out of options 1 more thing after I hook my old drive back up it takes a while to boot back up.

Windows xp pro
Intel mobo
4 gigs ram
dual Lite-on SATA drives
Antec 900 case
thermaltake 430 watt ps
Maxtor IDE PCI controller connecting 2 Seagate ide drives
1 more Seagate 500 gig drive to mobo SATA port
Rosewill RCX-Z300 92mm Ball CPU Cooler

Hello,

I am assuming that you want the 500 GB HDD to be the main one that Windows XP installs on?

For testing purposes only I need you to do the following...
1. Set the RAM in your BIOS to the Default option (as far as clocking goes)
2. Disconnect your IDE PCI card
3. Last, start up your computer with the SATA HDD connected and go immediately into the BIOS. Check all the hard drive and SATA settings. Make sure that everything is set correctly.
4. Insert your Windows XP cd, restart your computer and boot to the Windows XP cd

Tell me what happens.

The 500 gig drive is for storage only my new drive is a 320 gig Seagate drive
plugged into SATA 1 on the mobo thats the one that I can't boot into when I hook it up. I have disconnected the other drives and removed the controller and disconnected 1 of the burners.
I will try your suggestion thanks

oohkay, got it now, sorry for the confusion.

Disconnect every drive and IDE PCI controller except for that one SATA drive that you plan to install Windows on.

If you still are unable to go through the Windows XP install process successfully then I suggest that you unplug your SATA HDD from port 1 and plug it into port 2, see if that works.

Well I tried switching SATA ports and same thing funny thing is when I hook up the old drive and put in a XP CD the same thing happens and when I boot with no CD I get black screen with no boot at all.
If I turn the power off and pull the plug for about 30 min. It boots right up !

All this started happening when I moved everything  to the new case also the ps is new as well as the cpu cooler fan I used Spotmau boot disc ( boots right up to that ) to repair the the mbr thinking that might be a problem. Take the disc out and reboot and black screen again no hard drive activity at all ?

Did you switch motherboards, like get a new one?

Also I have had similar problems like this in the past. The problem was always the RAM memory settings within the BIOS. I tend to get performance memory that can be clocked a tad bit higher than normal. When I clock it up a bit the computer refuses to allow me complete a full Windows install.

I found someone with a similar problem. http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/99609816/m/246001009731

Here are 2 possible solutions I got from that thread...
- Reset your motherboard BIOS to the Default settings

If that does now work...

- Place the hard drive in the external USB to SATA enclosure and plug it into another PC. Delete All partitions, including the active partition. To do this...
1. Plug in the HDD via the external USB enclosure

2. RIGHT-click your "My Computer" or "Computer" icon and select "Manage"

3. On the left panel select, Storage > Disk Management

4. On the main (middle) window find your drive on the bottom, RIGHT-click and Delete all partitions, even the Active partition

5. Place the hard drive in your computer again and attempt to install Windows XP via the CD again

I did not have the external device with me so I just hooked up the new drive where my 500 gig drive was hooked up booted up and got an invalid boot.ini error message.
Tried to boot up to a windows cd and it hung up on Windows is inspecting your hardware configuration ( original problem ) booted up to Spotmau boot cd and checked the boot.ini which looked fine to me used the repair registry option on the cd and rebooted and it booted fine.
So where do I go from here ?

So you have the hard drive booting fine with Windows now? After the repair you performed were you able to use the Windows XP CD to reinstall windows?

A little more info on my setup
radeon x700 series video card running dual monitors and a Turtle Beach sound card
with on board sound disabled in the bios. I had read that 2 monitors could be a problem so I have tried only using 1 and still no go How about stripping everything out and then trying again ?

Yes, stripping everything out and starting up the computer from the basic setup is something I would do.

I was also thinking about your problem earlier and another way to test the hard drive...

Do you have another desktop PC? Or maybe a close friend or relative could allow you to perform a (safe) experiment using their computer?

If so then I would recommend disabling their hard drive (just pull out the power and data connections, leave it mounted if possible) and replacing it with yours. Then try to boot up to the Windows XP CD and install Windows on your hard drive.

This would single out your hard drive and take out the possibility of any other hardware on your main computer in question messing with the WinXP CD install.

I will bring it to work and have the IT guy try that as I don't have another PC handy.
He has already messed with mine and can't figure it out either so maybe this is worth a try. Will let you know next week

After reading my last comment it sounded a little sarcastic to me and that was not my intention. What I meant to say was thanks for all your help and thanks for this site
