hi joey,
ive noticed when i turn my pc on,my power packs fan vibrates and makes a small clicking noise.
a gentle love tap seems to fix the problem.
is it possible to open the power pack and reseat the fan, also give it a clean and bearing oil?
or could it be a sign that the pack is on its way out?

its great to be back online (ive been without Internet for over a month now) and am looking forward to reading all the latest posts.
cheers davo.

Hi Davo,

The only part on a computer that could put a real hurt on you is the power supply / power pack. It doesn’t matter if it is disconnected from a power outlet, it could shock you really good. I have always been told to never open it up if it fails, just purchase a new one.
I’d recommend purchasing a new one since they are pretty cheap nowadays.
You can open it up and see if you can fix it but do it with extreme caution but beware of any metal contact with your body.

Good to have you back  Smiley

hi again,i just did a quick unboxing on my new router.before i started the recording i was aware that my webcam was picking up on the noise i mentioned in the post above.i figured that i can just narrate the vid later and went ahead with it any how.im sure its related to the same issue.theres definitely a distorted clicking thats louder than my vocals.
once i hook the router up,depending on if my service is active of coarse.ill upload the unboxing and you can listen to the noise for yourself.its about 62mb WMV file.
ill put it on mediafire and drop you a link.
if its not the power pack it would have to be the mother board itself.
i believe its also responsible for my browser freezing occasionally, forcing me to crash sometimes aswell, also causing one of my ram cards to not be read in basic information.i already formated a month ago trying to trouble shoot it and have only just connected to the net on that PC thru wireless broadband.
i may open the power supply and inspect it,is there an easy way to earth myself or the p,supply without purchasing one of those wrist straps?
oh yea my floorboards are wooden and i have rubber sole steel cap boots if that will help.

thanx again davo Smiley

hi joey Smiley
yesterday i removed most of my hardware unplugged all the cables etc...
i then got a small, thin paint brush and carefully cleaned every part of inside the casing including the motherboard, graphics card, under the processor fan and so on.blew all the remaining dust i had collected out.
then using a torch i looked inside the power supply thru the fan on the back of the PC,got the brush and wiped the fan as clean as i could.
i noticed that the pack has 4 bolts attaching to the back and also 4 screws attaching the fan itself.
i twisted those screws loose but not completely unscrewing them.i then adjusted the fans position and tightened them back up.
reinstalled the hard drive,RAM cards, cables,LED's,fans etc...
restarted several times and seemed to work well, then formated the PC again.
everything seems to be working well for now.i also noticed some of my temperatures in my BIOS are slightly cooler aswell.
as for the web cam it seems the 2 front USB ports are the issue, using a different port works and ive added an extention cable from the back for quick plugin.
so im hoping i have fixed my problem.

There is a charge that is held within the power supply that is dangerous. If you touch the wrong parts inside that charge may get transferred to you.

Glad the temps dropped. Dust definitely causes heat buildup. An overheated PC may cause problems.

Any device that sucks up a decent amount of power like a printer, scanner and webcam should be plugged into the rear. The front USB panel can't supply enough juice to those devices.

thanks joey
fortunately i didnt need to remove the power supply.aswell as adjusting the fan slightly,i think that there was to much air intake and couldnt expel fast enough from the pc.
i also think my pc was bumped about during moving house.
everything seems to be working well.but i have noticed that every once in a while my BIOS resets its self, like the time and date along with the start up sequence.
so when i boot up i sometimes get a message like (from memory) dskcheck failed, failed to read hardware.or couldnt read the hard drive.
so i have to go back into my BIOS and change the time, date and disable floppy,CD/DVD and set SATA as my 1st Boot Sequence.then F10 enter. then i get a message saying no Master Device. then windows loads correctly.
so im unsure wether to remove the battery, set my SATA (hard drive) to my BIOS (i think Esc will take me there, but not sure what to set it to) or perhaps Flash my BIOS (but i would probably have to download the drivers to do that)
so yea its definitely a hardware issue, ive practically rebuilt the computer (short of removing the motherboard and battery).
any advice or links to vids from any tech aswell as joey would be really appreciated.
thanks davo Smiley
