I`ve set everything i know how to in tools options-rules and alerts-sounds in control panel and still the new mail notification only sounds when i click on send receive for emails from my contacts and no other emails. When i get to set a sound to play , in rules and alerts i click on an underlined rule and it comes to select a sound to play and click open, nothing happens. Do you have any suggestions? I will make you a video tutorial on how to turn on new email sound notifications when I get home from work today.

Here are quick directions on where to go within the Outlook 97 menu...
TOOLS > OPTIONS > EMAIL OPTIONS > ADVANCED EMAIL OPTIONS

I have gone to tools>options>email options>advanced email options and the play a sound box is ticked. I`ve also gone to Sounds in Control panel(attached) and rules and alerts in Outlook 2007. The main problem is the new email notification doesn`t play a sound on incoming emails only on emails from my contacts when i click on send/receive. Hi terrace  Smiley

If you have already went through the advanced email options and checked the option then there is some sort of extra setting within Outlook 2007 that is causing your problem.

The sound settings/control panel options have nothing to do with the problem if you are getting any type of sound for any email received regardless of who it is from.

Today I opened up Outlook 2007 on my work computer for the 1st time and set it up with an email address of mine. No other settings were messed with and I had zero contacts added. Each time I sent myself an email from another address the new email notification sound went off.
I have Outlook 2007 installed on my home computer. I use it everyday and have been for a long time. I have a few email addresses configured and many contacts added. Whenever I receive an email from anyone, contacts or non-contacts I receive a sound notification. I very rarely change any settings or attempt to make any adjustments on Outlook. All the settings are almost set to 100% default.

I am not sure what is conflicting with your default Outlook 2007 settings. Check all your “Rules and Alerts” settings.

Thank You, i`m on Outlook 2007 not Outlook 97 as you mentioned. Terry

As far as i know the sound only happens when i send an email to myself and click on send/receive. I sent the attachments of what`s in my Outlook 2007 rules and alerts if you wish to have a look? Terry

Sorry, I meant 2007. Don't know why I wrote 97 one-hundred times, lol.

You should not have to create any special rule or alert for the sound to go off. Off of a fresh install at work the new notification sound plays fine, with no contacts added.

Can you disable or delete all of your rules and alerts? I am thinking one of these is conflicting with the default setting which is to play a sound on any email received from any email sent to your INBOX (the sound is muted when I only receive mail in my spam folder).

# Start regedit.exe.
# Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\MailBeep\.current.
# Double-click (Default), and set its value to the WAV file to play.
# Click OK.
# Close regedit.
# Restart the machine. I found this on google and checked it in mine.(see attached)but no different.[img=http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/6074/ringinwave.jpg]
By deezalboy Anyway i`ll check rules and alerts to see if i can disable things.

Grin I`ve unticked everything i can in rules and alerts but just can`t get that sound to play on all incoming emails. The sound will play when i send an email to myself and click on send/receive. The control panel is set correctly. A mystery so far.

::)Could it be that i`ve missed something so simple. Does the Inbox have to be open for the New email notification sound to be heard. I`ve been checking with the inbox open and it sounds. With it in another folder e.g. deleted items or sent items it doesn`t sound. ::)Terry

I just thought of something from looking at your screen shot.  Temporarily exit out of Google Desktop and AVG. Then test it out again.

:)Yes i can temporarily exit out of Google Desktop and AVG, but i think i`d have to have AVG off for too long too check. Terry I1ve tried this again but not working.f you've configured a sound to play when a new email message arrives and that sound doesn't play even after you've used the Control Panel Sound applet to confirm that it is correctly configured, you can configure the sound via the registry:

   1. Start regedit.exe.
   2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\MailBeep\.current.
   3. Double-click (Default), and set its value to the WAV file to play.
   4. Click OK.
   5. Close regedit.
   6. Restart the machine.

End of Article
Something strange. Maybe i`m not doing this regedit.exe thing properly?

The Control Panel or Registry would not have anything to do with your problem if the sound plays when you receive an email via your contacts. It might fix your problem if sound never played contacts or otherwise. Either a setting in Outlook or a program like AVG, Google Desktop or firewall software is blocking the sound from playing.

:)Hello again. I`ve just turned off AVG 8.5 Free and Google Desktop and sent an email to myself. It takes quite a while for the email to come in but if i click on send/receive it comes in immediately and the sound plays, but i`ll wait for it to come in by itself. I have been told by the AVG Free forum that AVG Free doesn`t have a firewall. I`ve been all over Outlook tools/options etc.,-rules and alerts and sounds in control panel. I`ll let you know what happens. Cheers-Terry

:)Now i`ve tried turning AVG and Google Desktop on and off, both off, one on and vice versa and sent emails to myself and now after three emails to myself the sound is playing when they come back to me without clicking send/receive. This didn`t happen before. As i mentioned going into the registry editor may be a solution. Attached is a screen shot of what i did and now i can only think that did the trick. I`ll keep in touch. Terry. Note:-I turned the computer off and went for a walk and when i turned it on again an email of mine came in but the sound didn`t play. Maybe it`s not supposed to or AVG or Google could affect it sometimes. Roll Eyes

I am guessing AVG. Possibly Google Desktop. I seriously doubt it is any registry setting. That would only be the case of the sound did not play at all, meaning even when you received an email from someone in your contact list nothing would sound off.

Single AVG out by leaving Google Desktop on. Then see if it works. If AVG is the culprit then you have 3 options. Make an exception in AVG that tells it to leave Outlook alone and do not monitor it, leave it the way it is (and continuing with the sound problem) or uninstalling AVG and installing another free anti-virus program. Avast is also a good, free choice.

Today i tested as follows-AVG off/Google Desktop on and it rings--AVG on Google Desktop off and it rings. I have tested with both AVG and Google Desktop off and it rings. But it doesn`t ring at all times. So maybe i should uncheck the box(attachment) under email scanner settings/scan incoming messages in AVG and see if that is the problem what do you think?

No i`m sorry to say that didn`t work. I`ve been in touch with Microsoft but they are not much help. They want $88.00 for a little help. They guided me to support.microsoft.com/kb/246643 and that`s the following.

The article above assumes no sound is played when receiving any email from any person, contact or otherwise. Since the sound does play when you receive an email from your contacts the fix would not help.

I still say it is either Google Desktop or AVG. We made the most progress with disabling one or both of them. Check in the Google Desktop and AVG settings or advanced settings. Maybe you can turn something on or off which would do the job?

Sorry,(got that wrong) the sound only plays when i click send/receive after sending an email to myself and when i send an email to myself and wait for it to come in to my inbox, that takes about 30 minutes. I`ll try exiting Google Desktop again and see if there are other setiings i can turn off. Terry

Smiley  Hi, i found this article by Ken Slovak on Outlook 2003. Maybe the part about doesn`t play for all emails and approx. every 5 minutes applies to Outlook 2007. Attached-
I`ve also noticed that when i first turn Outlook 2007 on the email will come straight in and the sound will not play but if i send an email to myself and wait and leave Outlook open the sound will play.

Very interesting. I never knew the New Email Sound only plays every 5 minutes. I probably never new that because I have Outlook 2007 check for new mail every 10 minutes.

Grin Yes, it looks like we`ve solved something about the beast. Looking at it there`s really no need for a sound when just opening Outlook because we can see there is are email/s there. It seems not knowing these things i led myself to believe there was something wrong with it. I think when i was on Outlook Express a sound played for all emails. Thanks for your help. Terry- A BIG Thank You

Most of the registry cleaners either don't work that well. What I use is the free "CCleaner". I would recommend that you download it and use the "Registry" tool. Works good and most importantly it's safe to use on your registry.
