mobile internet options

I am moving in a couple of days and have almost a 2 week wait for my internet and phone connections to be put in.  Through desperate and uninformed searching, I have discovered mobile interent may be an option to see me through this time.  I am tring to figure out how all of this works and what my best/cheapest options are.  I am wondering how a mobile internet card or stick works and if I need tohave a internet connection already established to go this route.  I do not have a cell, but wonder if I were to get one with an option for internet, if I could use this as a modem for my laptop?  This is all new to me and I would be greatful for any advice!

The wireless internet will come in the form of a laptop card. It works on most areas like a cell phone. The speed will be slower than DSL or Cable internet but still decently fast.

Be aware that you might have to get into a contract if you get wireless internet. Look around and see which ones offer wireless w/o any contracts. Since it will be temporary don't go too crazy on any extra features, options or pay more for extra speed at a premium price.
