I`m on Windows XP Home Edition with Cable WI FI Big Pond-Netgear Modem and Adapter. When the computer boots up the Windows Startup sound/tune has static, missing, jerky. (that`s the best way i can explain it). It`s not static on all boot ups. Now, when the sound/tune is static etc., the computer does not connect to the cable wireless connection and a red "x" appears over the little tv screen in the task bar.  On the occasions the Windows sound/tune is not static etc., the sound is clear and the cable wireless connection is connected. Lots of times i have to repair the connection by right clicking on the little tv screen. It seems to me that the static Windows startup sound/tune may have something to do with the cable wi fi wireless not connecting. Could you throw some light on it please?   Grin

Do you have a cable modem that came from your Internet company and a separate Internet router? Like at my home I have cable Internet. My company gave me a cable modem. I also have an internet router connected to the cable modem so more than one computer can access it.

So do you have 2 boxes, cable modem and a router OR do you have 1 box that is a cable modem and router (2in1)?

I have one  cable Netgear Modem from the isp in the lounge and two computers in separate rooms with a Netgear Adapter in each in a usb port. This system can connect up to 3 computers through the same modem. I think the modem is called a router too. Attached are photos of the netgear modem and usb adapters.

I see now. Big Pond gave you an Internet modem with built-in wireless. I have never heard of the issue you are having so I searched around Google for a while. This is what I came up with. Maybe it will help.

Thanks for that information. The Windows startup sound is quite noticeable not feint. It`s not static on all boot ups. On the occasions the Windows sound/tune is not static etc., the sound is clear and the cable wireless connection is connected no problem. The annoying thing is when it`s choppy, static, and doesn`t connect, i have to frequently right click on the little tv screen in the task bar and click on repair to get it connected again, i shouldn`t have to do that.(see attached}. I`m wondering if a faulty sound card could cause this problem?   Grin

Do you by any chance have wireless speakers?

Static sound when the computer starts is one problem that I could be fixed and wireless Internet not working on occasion can be fixed. But when you combine the 2 and they are related, it stumps me. Don't know what the problem could be.

The only suggestion I have would be to call up Big Pond and talk to their tech support. Tell them the exact problem with every little detail. There is a chance you are not alone and other Big Pond customers are having similar issues.
