NEED HELP WITH PROXY!!!

hello im a student studying abroad in france right now. they have provided us internet in our rooms but only through an ethernet cable. we have a username and password to get on the internet through my french school. they have blocked skype and other video chatting websites because they say it interferes with the system (though it's hard for us international students because we can't contact our families).
i have a macbook (the black on with the camera) and I am able to connect to the school internet through airport in the library using my username and password.
ok, my problem is that once i am connected to the ethernet in my room I am able to sign in to the internet with my username and password but then I get a message that my browser is configured wrong and i need to either change it so 1. my proxy settings are automatic using a pac file with a url given or 2. manual with the server name and number given. Most kids in my dorm can access the internet through the first option but that doesn't work for me. Today I tried using the manual settings: under proxies i clicked manual, then web proxy (http) then put in the server name and number and checked the box "rpxy server requires password" and put in my username and password. This way I have internet but I am unable to log in to any email/facebook account i have. it'll take me to the login page but when i log in it says the internet isn't availible or its set up wrong. my friend had this same problem though the school does not block these websites. she got hers to work the automatic way eventually and we have the same computer!
also if theres any way to bypass the skype restriction that would also be helpful. i know nothing about computers so if you help me it will have to be explained step by step of what i should do.
PLEASE HELP
thank you sososososo much
