Hi Emma,

I want to make sure I have your computer and network setup correct first…
- You have a D-Link DSL router. The model is DSL-G604T Wireless ADSL Modem w/ 4-Port Router 802.11g, 54Mbps. Here is a link to what you have http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DSL-G604T-Wireless-4-Port-802-11g/dp/B0006GDCL2

- You use the Solwise PL-85PEW Wireless Homeplugs to connect all of your home computers to the Internet. Here is a link to what you have http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-pl-85pew.htm

- You have at least 1 XP PC, 1 Vista PC and 1 Win7 PC within your home. The only one that cannot connect to it is your new Windows 7 PC which is a Dell Inspiron 545 desktop (which you try to connect it to your 545s ethernet port)

What I need you to do first is to make sure the ethernet connection on the Dell Inspiron 545 desktop is working. I know it will be a pain but it is important… you need to take your 545 desktop to the same room where the D-link DSL router is and set it up in that room. Then connect it straight into your D-link router via ethernet. If your Dell 545 ethernet connection is working fine it should easily connect to the Internet. You may need to restart your D-link router by unplugging to the power connection to it after you connect your Dell 545.

If you can’t get your Dell 545 to connect to your D-link DSL then the problem is your Dell ethernet connection.

If it does connect to the Internet then the next thing I need you to do is test out your Wireless connection. I am not sure if your Dell 545 came with wireless, if it did I need you to test it out while you are in the same room as your D-link 545.

Hi

Wdows7 pc works fine when taken downstairs and connected straight to internet via wall socket. Haven't tried through router with ethernet but will do so in the morning.  Opinion seems to be that the dlink is not compatible with wdows 7 (checked on windowsd 7 compatibility website and dlink is now defunkt with no driver updates).  So could it be that even though I plug the 545 ethernet connection into the router and it doesn't work, it could be dwn to the fact that the dlink is incompatible with wdows 7 rather than ethernet problem?   Sorry about spelling, on teensy android phone right now

Thaks for your help. Will report back.

If it works when connected to a wired ethernet wall socket then the Dell 545 wired connection is fine. I just wanted you to test it out on a good wired connection so we would know if it worked or was defective.

Now that we know the Dell 545 ethernet connection is working I was wondering about the configurations with the XP and Vista computers. In order to get them working with the Solwise homeplugs, did you have to install any software on them?
