I am looking for a good system that I am not sure if it would work. Here is an example.

I have a desktop that connected to (wired) the wireless router and the printer. Another laptop in another room is connected to (not wired) the wireless routern. I hate to email an attachment to print it oiut. EX: After sending an email with an attachement from the laptop, then I have to go to turn the desktop and printer on so I can open an email with attaachment and print this attachment.

So I am thinking of a better way to print any via a bluetooth USB. To make it work,
disconnect the wire between the desktop and printer, plug a bluethooth USB into the desktop, another bluetooth USB into the laptop, and a bluetooth recieving USB into the printer. That way, I can print either from desktop or laptop. Will it work? If so, can you suggest a few brands.

Thank you

Hello rsb, welcome to the site.

I want to make sure I am getting things correct.
You have 1 wireless router that also is able to hook up computers via a wired connection. 1 computer is connected via wire, 1 computer is connected via wireless. The printer you have is connected via USB to the wired internet computer.

I need to know the make and model # of your printer. And I need to know what operating system you are using on both computers (XP, Vista, Linux, Mac, etc).

That is right... The operating systems as follow:
Desktop computer connected by the wire is Windows XP;
Laptop connected by wireless is Windows VISTA.

The printer is connected by wire to the Desktop computer right now but I want to this Desktop computer to be connected to the printer by Bluetooth USB. So is the laptop.

The printer is HP Laser 1600.

Hope it helps.
Thank you

I recommend connecting the HP printer to your router via ethernet wired network cable (I assume it is in the same room?). You can do this using a network print server.

I recommend using an ethernet (wired) print server over Bluetooth for a few reasons…
1. It’s less than half the price
2. Even if money was no object, at the moment wired is still better than wireless for a reliable connection. Just compare a wired ethernet computer’s connection reliability with wireless. Wireless is almost there but it still might have interferences sometimes. Also compare a cell phone signal quality using a high quality wireless Bluetooth vs a mid-range wired earpiece.
3. There are many wired ethernet print servers on the market, there are few wireless Bluetooth print servers to choose from. Since there is more competition manufacturers are urged to improve their products even more or lose customers/money

Here is a Netgear print server that should work for you…

All done and successfull... There was a diffuculty to begin with on my XP Desktop. About 45 min later, found a solution. It was ZoneAll firewall so I added this print server IP address to the Trust list and all went well. Then worked on my Vista laptop and it went thru very easy.
Thank you very much for your big help...

Glad to hear it it is installed. Thank you for replying when it was complete so I know the advice I gave was good. This way I can direct the next person who asks this question to this thread.  Smiley

btw, I went through my list and I forgot there is a #4. Regular Wireless-B and especially G travels a LOT further than BluTooth. You will be able to print up something with your laptop from outside your house, maybe even your neighbors house. BluTooth will only work when you are 1, maybe if you are lucky 2 rooms away.
