I hear and read many times that Linux is open source. What is its mean?

It means that the source code of the program is available to anyone free of charge. So anybody that knows how to program can modify the software to their delight and do it legally.

You can do this with most Linux operating systems. You cannot do this with Windows.

The open source  Linux uses means that you can obtain the software free of charge, and you can obtain the source code to the software and make changes to it if you want. You can then re-distribute it if you like, provided you supply the source code with your changes too.
