----- SOLUTION #1 (wipe out all data and start from scratch)
1. Backup all your important data (music, movies, pictures, MS Office files and all other data you value)
2. Your laptop should have come with at least one recovery CD. You will use it to wipe out your computer and start from scratch. Your computer will be exactly the same as the day you purchased it.
3. Use the recovery CDs to reinstall Windows XP again from scratch. No matter what the error was or what your computer was infected with it will all be erased.
4. Once the recovery process is over fully update Windows XP via “Windows Update”
5. Everything should be back to normal
6. The first 2 programs to reinstall should be your Anti-Virus program (in your case AVG) and the free version of the program named, “Anti-Malware” from “Malwarebytes”. I recommend the free Malwarebytes to anybody who uses Social Networking or Email on a regular basis
7. Reinstall any other programs you want on your laptop
8. How does Windows feel now?
----- SOLUTION #2 (attempt to deal with the situation with some cleaning)
1. Backup all your important data (music, movies, pictures, MS Office files and all other data you value). You will not be erasing Windows like the solution above but it is ALWAYS important to backup your valuable data just in case something goes wrong and you have to revert to the solution above to bring back your computer up
2. Look at the left side of your keyboard. There is a button towards the bottom that has a Windows symbol on it. Hold down that key and then press the, “R” key. A “Run” dialogue will appear. Within that dialogue box type in, “msconfig” and press the Enter key
3. Click the, “Startup” tab toward the right. It will list every program that Automatically starts with Windows stars. Uncheck any familiar program on that list you do not wish to automatically start when Windows starts. Do not worry, these programs will still be 100% functional, you just have to manually start them up like you do most other programs by Double-clicking an icon on your computer. Uncheck as many programs as you can (that you recognize). Be sure to leave AVG checked.
4. When you are done Click, “Apply” and then “OK”. Then restart your computer.
5. Use CCleaner to clean out any temp/unneeded files and also unneeded Windows Registry entries. Here is a tutorial on that:
http://www.cleartechinfo.com/Learn-How-To-CCleaner-Clean-Optimize-Free-Up-Hard-Drive-Space-Windows6. Go to your START BUTTON menu. Under, Accessories > System Tools is a shortcut to a program called, “Disk Defragmenter”. Open up and use that program. The program/process may take an hour to complete
7. Restart your computer once more.
8. How is everything now?
