I tried the free Safety Scanner from http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/tuneup.htm, and it crashed my Windows XP when the scan was finished. When the scan finished it had errors about Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Then my computer just shuts it's self down and when it restarted, it said an error "Windows could not start because the following file i missing or corrupt:<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file." I think it means to re-install the reboot disk but I'm not sure, and if it is..I lost the reboot disk. Is there a possible way to make a reboot for my Windows Xp Home Edition computer? Sad

Sorry to hear about the crash. If any site would be safe for Windows you would think Microsoft's Live site would be.

Try this to fix the problem...
1. Make sure the computer is powered OFF
2. Turn ON the computer and start tapping the "F8" key repeatedly. You will be taken to a special boot screen
3. Select the option, "Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)"

See if that works.  Smiley

Sorry. Every other fix needs a Windows XP CD.
Also, in order to create a boot disk you need Windows XP working.

Do you know if your original Windows XP CD was specialized for your computer (like a custom HP or Dell boot disk) or was it a general/standard Windows XP CD?
