how do you open an old Microsoft document with a new Microsoft word( I don’t know what year it is)

When I open it it says

Microsoft needs a converter to display this file correctly this feature is not currently installed would you like to install it now

I then press yes

it says

the feature you are trying to use is on a cd-rom or other removable disk that is not available insert the microsoft word 2002 disk and click ok

I press ok

The path works suite word cd or dvd cannot be found verify that you have acess to this location and try again or try to find the installation package WORDRET.MSI in a folder from which you can install the product Microsoft word 2002

i cancle the boxs

Error 1706 setup cannot find the required files check you connection to the network or cd rom drive for other solutions to this problem see c:/program files/Microsoft office /office 10/1033/SETUP.HLP

then a box with hiroglifs show up

do I have to install a converter what is that
this file only shows what to do if your have the installer c:/program files/Microsoft office /office 10/1033/SETUP.HLP
i cant find WORDRET.MSI i looked in the c/ drive

Hello,

We had a similar situation at my job. I solved it by downloading a special converter from Microsoft.
I might be able to find a converter for your situation but I need to know 2 important things…
1. What is the exact version of Microsoft Word that you have installed and are using right now, 2002, 2005 or maybe something newer?
2. What is the exact version of the old Microsoft Word document that you are trying to access, 2002, 2005 or another version?

Thanks

I am guessing that the document you can't open is a newer 2003.

Download and install this MS Office File converter pack. It should do the job.

NOTE: After the converter is installed restart your computer. Then open up MS Word, go to, File>Open and file/open the file you want to open/convert.

I am not sure how private the file is but if you email it to me I will try to open it on my computer. I have the newest version of Office which is 2007. I also could try to open it with other programs if that doesn't work.

If you are okay with sending me the file I will private message you my email.

Download OpenOffice.org. Try to open it with one of their programs. They have built-in converters.
