After the highly publicized lawsuit against The Pirate Bay I had various non-techy friends ask me about BitTorrent technology. They wanted to know exactly what it was and how it was used for file sharing. I recommend that you check out Technobabble episode 2 for an explanation as to what BitTorrent is and how it works.
[adblockingdetector id=”2″]Continuing from my explanation of how BitTorrent works on Technobabble episode 2… When an individual decides to share a file on his/her computer they create a small “torrent” file and upload it to an online server. That torrent file does not contain any part of the file(s) they want to share. It is more like a text file that contains information about the file(s) and instructs “BitTorrent Clients” such as BitComet and uTorrent where to download the file from. The file(s) are downloaded from individual users computers (like you and I). Each time a new person starts to download the file(s) to their computer they have the option to share it with other BitTorrent users.
A question a lot of you may ask is, “What is the legality of BitTorrent?” The BitTorrent technology itself is 100% legal. What a lot of people use the BitTorrent technology for is illegal. I will give you an analogy… Where I live it is legal to own a handgun with a proper license / permit. You can shoot your handgun at any shooting range or gun club as much as you want, it is within our rights. But if one day someone decides to take their handgun they legally own and go on a shootin spree killing several people, that is illegal. Note: I am showing you how to download a file with the BitTorrent technology using BitComet but there are many other programs out there that allow you to do the same thing.
