Thanks for the helpful information. I had read somewhere that the easy way to save important material from an old Microsoft XP desktop before wiping it clean and putting a Linux OS on it , was to connect the XP to a newer computer using a USB/USB cable. But then came across a piece saying that using that way of transferring data could lead to problems.
